| Swedish Massage - What It Is and What It Can Do for You |
Swedish Massage is a natural therapy (or method treatment), the value of which has been recognized from earliest days of history to the present not only by drugless therapists, but by medical men as well. Massage is a scientific treatment of certain passive systematic manipulations upon the nude skin of the human body, with the object of promoting and maintaining a balanced circulation. Tissue change is aided by properly applied massage and, as a result, the work of tissue change is greatly prompted and proper nutrition is secured. In many chronic cases, this tissue change is greatly interfered with, thereby resulting in accumulations of toxins and poisons and waste material in the system, owing to the fact that the cells being deprived of oxygen are unable to perform their excretory functions properly.
The effect of massage is manifold. While it is apparent that one effect is to relax the muscles of the body, another is to set the blood in circulation and to throw off the poison which have accumulated. Still another is to stimulate nerve activity, to quiet and soothe the nervous system, and to break up deposits in the joints, etc. It is not the blood flow alone which is aided by massage; the lymphatic circulation also is stimulated, thus all secretory and glandular functions are stimulated to activity.
The Swedish Massage is the most scientific. It is vigorous and bracing. It exercises the muscles to the bone, and gives the same benefit at each treatment as would a walk of several miles, yet without producing fatigue, a point of great importance, especially in connection with diseases of the heart.
The effect of massage upon the organs of LOCOMOTION: (the muscles, ligaments and bones) bring about improved nutrition, increased cellular activity and increased blood supply.
CIRCULATION: Swedish Massage increases the circulation. The contractions of the heart become more complete and forceful. The heart muscle is developed, the blood pressure in the veins is reduced, which in turn acts beneficially upon the heart and arterial circulation
RESPIRATION: Massage develops the respiratory muscles, increasing the mobility of the chest and promoting lung expansion.
DIGESTION: Massage propels the contents of the bowels in the natural direction. It quickens the cellular activity, thereby producing more effectual free and normal bowel movements.
ORGANS OF ELIMINATION: The increased metabolism caused by massage stimulates the organs of elimination (skin, lungs and the kidneys) to greater activity.
THE BRAIN AND THE NERVOUS SYSTEM: As a result of the increased circulation, the brain and nervous sytem also receive a greater supply of blood and thus vital activity of these organs is increased. It is readily seen that a method of healing, producing such far reaching effects must necessarily have a wide range of applicability. Influencing as it does every function and organ of the body directly, its claim of being one of the most effective means of correcting activity of the human function cannot be disputed.
